It’s not just in the board room that things appear to be stale. The atmosphere seems to have gone somewhat flat at Parkhead in recent times for obvious reasons. The matchday experience needs freshened up and the club DJ has a part to play in that.
For too long the same old songs have been played over the speakers at Celtic Park. It’s time to add some new tunes into the mix. Of course there is still a place for the legendary tunes like YNWA and The Celtic Song, but they shouldn’t be overplayed. I feel the Celtic Song plays every time Celtic take to the field. Pre-match and after half time.
There are several quality songs from our past that should be brought back into the cycle. What happened to great songs like Over and Over from the 90’s? You don’t hear it in the stands or over the speakers anymore. That’s for another post. Today, it’s all about three songs I think the club DJ could add to help give things a lift when the time is right.
Song 1: The Pre-Match Builder — Coldplay (“Paradise”)
Not everyone likes Coldplay. I get it, but in my opinion the club are missing a trick by not incorporating Paradise into our match day routine on a regular basis. I believe it’s been played on occasion but not at key moments and not consistently.
- The Moment to Play It: I’d play it on big European nights right before players come out onto the field. Build up the atmosphere using the light show. Show opposing fans and people watching at home why they call the place Paradise. I’d consider utilising a drone to capture the lights and the song before the players enter the pitch.
Song 2: The Ultimate Walk-Out Track — Led Zeppelin (“Immigrant Song” / “Kashmir”)
- Two songs by rock legends Led Zeppelin could be used to inject further atmosphere right before kickoff in big games. I was at a European game years ago where they played Kashmir as the players entered the field. Was it Fenerbahce under Ronny Deila maybe? Just as things built to a fever pitch I thought it captures the intensity perfectly. I’d bring that back for big games instead of The Celtic Song. I’d also maybe use the Immigrant song for obvious reasons. Another big tune by Led Zeppelin. Both songs have potential to capture the moment perfectly right before battle in my opinion.
- The Moment to Play It: As the players are shown in the tunnel ready to walk out. We love the Celtic Song but it doesn’t do the same job. Time for something new.
Song 3: The Post-Match Celebration Track — Sabrina (“Boys”)
A post match song that could be the new Just Can’t get enough for us. A potential go to when the fans want to celebrate the way Depeche Mode was previously used. An upbeat song the fans can chant Bhoys, Bhoys, Bhoys. Lighthearted tune to keep the party going.
- The Moment to Play It: A song the players can hear as they walk round the pitch celebrating a good result. Got potential to be a great Celtic Song for years.
What Do You Think?
Would these tracks be a positive addition to the Celtic Park playlist? Traditional fans might not like the sound of adding non Celtic songs on a regular basis but I feel it’s time the club modernised on and off the pitch. This is an area they can start experimenting with moving forward. Agree?
